Hwy 11 expansion South of North Bay set to go - can't wait to see it finished!

(Nipissing MPP Monique Smith - News Release)

Ontario’s continuing investment in northern highway infrastructure will bring about the final expansion of a four-lane bypass on Highway 11 south of North Bay.

The project will complete and open to traffic a new 17-kilometre four-lane bypass around the communities of South River and Sundridge. Work includes grading, drainage, illumination and paving. Also, the existing two-lane Highway 11 between South River and Sundridge will be rehabilitated and become part of Highway 124 once the bypass opens. The new four-lane bypass will open to traffic in the fall of 2011.

This initiative is part of the Open Ontario plan, which will bring economic growth and jobs to Northern Ontario. About 230 jobs will be created through this project.

“It is so exciting to know that our four-laning project of Highway 11 is nearing completion. This four-lane highway to North Bay will improve safety and increase opportunities for economic development in our region,” said Monique Smith, MPP for Nipissing.

“Our commitment to the expansion of Highway 11 is reflected in the fact that, through the Northern Highways Program, there are now five major expansion projects currently underway on the highway south of North Bay,” said Michael Gravelle, Minister of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry.

"Our ongoing investment has kept the expansion of Highway 11 on schedule for completion by 2012 as well as promoting economic development and job creation," said Kathleen Wynne, Minister of Transportation.

QUICK FACTS
  • Aecon Construction has been awarded the $32.9-million contract.
  • Earlier this year, Teranorth Construction and Engineering of Sudbury was awarded a $44.8-million contract to twin another section of Highway 11 near Burk’s Falls.
  • By the fall of 2012, Highway 11 will be fully operational as a four-lane freeway up to North Bay.
  • The 2010 Ontario Budget committed $773 million to northern highway rehabilitation and expansion in 2010-2011.
