Happy Birthday to the Canadian Flag

The 45th Anniversary of Canada's National Flag happens on February 15, 2010 - in the middle of the Olympic Games in Vancouver / Whistler.

Since it first appeared in 1965, our distinctive maple leaf flag has become a national icon. It is recognized both at home and abroad as a symbol of peace, democracy, freedom and courage.

On this date 45 years ago, the flag was raised for the first time on Parliament Hill, in communities across Canada and at our embassies and missions around the world.

Happy Birthday to the Maple Leaf!

Putting North Bay on the map resp. on the Monopoly Canada Board

North Bay is on the short list of 65 cities with a chance to be on Hasbro's Monopoly Canada board. There will be 20 communities chosen through an online voting contest at www.monopolyvote.ca, which began Monday and ends Feb. 7.

Please go to www.monopolyvote.ca and vote for North Bay. You can enter one vote ever day until February 7th!

The city with the most votes will be featured on the highest rent property traditionally held by Boardwalk.

Two cities not on the list will be chosen as part of a "wildcard" vote and will occupy the low rent properties traditionally held by Mediterranean and Baltic avenues.

May be Rockview Camp Cottage Resort should apply for the next edition after this one to be on the board - wouldn't that be fun?

Who said that there is nothing going on during the winter season?

A Midwinter Multi-Arts Festival is coming to North Bay later this month. The January 24th to 30th event featuring the northern Ontario premiere of Richard Einhorn's "Voices of Light".

That will be performed by the Near North Voices choir and the North Bay Symphony in front of the second screening of the 1928 silent film "The Passion of Joan of Arc".

There's also an academic luncheon along with a couple of art events at the WKP Kennedy Gallery and the White Water Gallery during the week.

Overall, the festival looks to draw attention to organizations that serve women in the community.

Funds raised will be donated locally to True Self Employment and Training, the Transition House and the Aids Committee of North Bay and Area.

There is always something going on in Ontario's Near North!

Ice fishing has started on Lake Nipissing

Ice fishing has begun on January 1 on Lake Nipissing.

Here is a little reminder to be careful when venturing onto the frozen lake or any other waterway:

"The Provincial Police want people to be vigilant and aware of the ice conditions before heading out onto any bodies of water. OPP say the strongest ice is clear blue in colour -- and at least 8 inches or 20 centimeters or more is needed for snowmobiles with a foot needed for most light vehicles.

They also say anglers should be checking before going out on the ice, bring along appropriate clothing and equipment and let others know where they plan on fishing. Meantime, police say ice doesn't freeze at a uniform thickness and ice over flowing water, pressure cracks, mouths of rivers and streams and more can be weaker than surrounding ice.

Also of note, a layer of heavy snow can insulate the ice below and slow down freezing. "

Have fun out there and stay safe!
